Founder of .CA Domain Receives Recognition

Do you ever wonder how the Canadian web domain .ca was created or how long it's been around for? As history would have it, the top-level country domain was created solely by John Demco, co-founder and director of Webnames.ca, more than 20 years ago.
Because of his efforts, Demco will now be honoured by the University of British Columbia (UBC) for creating the .ca country code for Canada and managing it on a volunteer basis for more than 10 years.
The department of computer science at UBC will now name its undergraduate computing learning facility "The Demco Student Learning Centre."
Stephen Smith, president of Webnames.ca, has worked with Demco for over nine years and according to Smith, it has been an incredible pleasure to work with Demco.
"He (Demco) is a genuine visionary," said Smith. "John anticipated how people would use the internet and so he created the .ca domain many years before the widespread adoption of the Net. Not only is John an innovator of .ca, he continues to play an important role in the governance of the Canadian Internet."
Demco first conceived the .ca domain name in 1987 by managing requests and approving applications by hand. By the year 2000, almost 100,000 dot-ca domain names were registered by Demco and his team of UBC volunteers.
Presently, there are now more than a million .ca domains registered with 76 per cent of Canadians preferring to do their shopping on .ca websites.
Demco currently resides in Vancouver, BC where he is active in corporate planning for Webnames.ca, which is 100 per cent Canadian owned and operated. He also publishes a weekly domain name newsletter and continues to look over the adoption and use of the .ca domain.
