VeloCity Hits Waterloo U

The University of Waterloo, one of Canada's most innovative universities, will be launching the world's first student residence designed to integrate up-and-coming entrepreneurs with colleagues that have similar ideas when it comes to communications and digital media.
VeloCity, a "dorm-cubator" for top students, will be welcoming the first group of students to the university this week. Seventy upper-year and graduate students will develop ideas that are directly related to digital media and mobile communications. They will eventually form project teams, paired up with an industry mentor to help them create more effective business strategies.
At the end of the term, students will present the results of their team's work at a symposium where potential investors and industry partners will be in attendance. The students will also legally own the rights to their inventions thanks to the university's intellectual property laws.
Sean Van Koughnett, founder and director of the dorm-cubator, believes that the mix of talent and ideas by the inventive students will create some exciting results.
"VeloCity allows some of our most enterprising students to collaborate with each other and form vital relationships with industry mentors and investors," said Koughnett.
Bo Hong Deng, a third-year student studying pure math and computer science is looking forward to starting his first year in the VeloCity.
"VeloCity grabbed my attention as a most stimulating environment for creativity and entrepreneurship," said Deng. "I'm very excited about the possibility of making new friends and industry connections while beginning my journey to become a true entrepreneur."
A public open house of VeloCity will be held on Friday from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Minota Hagey residence on the UW campus.
