The Power to Stop Telemarketers is in Your Hands

In less than three weeks, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will launch the National Do Not Call List (DNCL). Beginning on September 30, Canadians will be able to register their telephone numbers on the DNCL for free so they can reduce the number of telemarketing calls and faxes they receive.
Telemarketers will also have to register with the DNCL. Even though there is no charge for registration, telemarketers must purchase a subscription for the area codes they intend to call. Telemarketers will then have to make sure that they are using a version of the National DNCL that isn't older than 31 days.
Not all telemarketing calls and faxes will be included in the National DNCL. Some telemarketers that will be allowed to keep phoning peoples numbers would include registered charities seeking donations, those selling subscriptions for newspapers, political parties and their candidates and companies that have an existing business relationship with a consumer within the past 18 months.
Calls made for the purpose of market research, polls and/or surveys are not considered telemarketing calls. The organizations making these types of calls are exempt from registering with the National DNCL.
All telemarketers must comply with the CRTC's Telemarketing Rules and Automatic Dialing and Announcing Device Rules.
For more information, on these rules visit crtc.gc.ca/eng/INFO_SHT/t1030.htm or go to www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/index-eng.html after Sept 30 to register your number on the DNCL.
