Epson’s Artisan Helps Professionals Print

As of today, Epson’s newest line of printers for the home and home office has been announced and will be available later this Fall.
The printers, Artisan models 700 and 800, each have diverse printing capabilities with the flagship 800 being more impressive for a somewhat larger price tag.
Talking about the printer at its pre-release summer showcase last month was Epson’s Chris Sabin, who was quick to point out the enhanced, easy to access interface of the 800 model.
“Our top of the line flagship model, the Artisan 800, has a 7.8’’ touch panel, which is the largest touch screen on any printer in the market right now,” Sabin said. “A lot of printers, you come up to the control panel and it’s cluttered with buttons… With the touch screen it only shows the things that you need when in a particular mode.”
With different modes offering different options, interface has always been an issue with multi-function printers. Switching from scan to copy might cause certain buttons to do different things, as number of buttons is limited. However, with a touch screen, that’s no longer a problem.
The Artisan 700 does not have the touch-screen interface, but does perform similarly to the 800.
A few more differences between the two models are the automatic document feeder which comes with the Artisan 800, faxing capabilities which are not featured on the Artisan 700 model and a higher scanning resolution (4800 dpi on the 800 versus 2400 dpi on the 700).
There are also a couple of creative capabilities on the Artisan 800 which are not on the 700, including the ability to turn photos into colouring book pages and the ability to print still frames from videos taken with a digital camera.
“Both have built-in Wi-Fi, which is great because anyone in the house can share it,” Sabin said. “It does have Ethernet networking as well, this way you can have one printer in the whole house, one set of ink cartridges to maintain, and everyone can easily access it.”
Both printers have the ability to print onto CD surfaces in about 40 seconds using a built in disc bay. The printers can also print black and colour pages in draft mode at speeds of up to 38 ppm.
Epson’s Artisan line of printers arrives soon after the release of their WorkForce series, which was released last Monday.
The Artisan 700 retails for $199.99, with the Artisan 800 ringing in at $299.99.
