Linksys' New Dual-Band Router Makes Wireless Media Faster

With the unveiling of the Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router, or WRT610N, Linksys has released yet another router aimed at small office/home office (SOHO) users and also for the more demanding users of media at home.
The main advantage of the new product is all in the name; operating on two bandwidths, 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz, the WRT610N is capable of using both at full capacity simultaneously, allowing users to use multiple devices on both channels without noticing a significant drop in connectivity.
This could be useful if one were operating a multitude of devices at the same time that all needed differing connectivity settings. For example, audio players and personal video recorders (PVRs) might operate most efficiently on the 5 GHz stream, with printers or auxiliary storage tuned in to 2.4 GHz.
“There are products on the market that are framed as Dual-Band that allow access to only one band at a time or lose transmission speeds when both bands are in use,” said Mani Dhillon, director of Linksys Consumer Business Organization. “As consumers begin to use the 5GHz spectrum for their multimedia devices, it becomes more important to have access to the full capabilities of both bands.”
This feature may become more important as more and more multimedia devices are released and made more common as well.
“Each day, more digital multimedia content is becoming available, and with that growth in availability comes the need to maintain the experience consumers have come to expect when enjoying a movie, watching an HDTV broadcast, or listening to their favorite music,” Dhillon said.
The WRT610N is available now with an MSRP of $199.99.
