Lenovo IdeaPad is the ThinkPad for the rest of us

New line will include face recognition for logon

The IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad has long been a favoured notebook computer among business road warriors. Now, Lenovo has introduced the IdeaPad for the rest of us.

First announced at a trade show a couple of months ago, the IdeaPad is set to be in stores next month. Lenovo has three models: The Y510, Y710 and U110. All are powered by Intel Centrino chipsets and include Dolby surround sound, special game controls and a frameless screen. The IdeaPads will also implement VeriFace Face Recognition. When used in conjunction with the computer’s built-in webcam, it will serve as a password replacement, offering a way to log into the PC and applications.

The IdeaPad Y710 is the flagship of the group, with a 17-inch widescreen display and a metallic blue case. The Y710 can be customized by adding a second hard drive and also has a Turbo mode to maximize power settings, including overclocking. The unit has five built-in speakers including a subwoofer. It uses an ATI GPU and among the options are a Blu-ray player.

The mainstream IdeaPad Y510 has a 15.4-inch widescreen display and a black linen-finish case. It also has an onboard sub-woofer and an integrated webcam.

The IdeaPad U110 is ultraportable with an 11-inch widescreen display. The unit weighs just a kilo (2.3 pounds) and is just two centimetres (0.7 inches) thick.

Prices will range from approximately $800 and up.

The launch of the new IdeaPad will coincide roughly with a marketing plan the company will be launching around the theme of “Ideas” and how the new line helps people transform the ideas into creative solutions.
