Pacemaker: world\'s first pocket-size DJ system

Swedish tech company Tonium Laboratories has the latest take on the personal music player. The Pacemaker, as it's called, is a music player with DJ functions that's small enough to hold in one hand. The DJ features include two outputs, two cross-faders and the ability to save the mix.

The unit is built around a 120 gigabyte hard drive and allows two tracks to be played at the same time. Tonium claims it has all the functions of full-size DJ mixers. The mixing software will automatically match the beats-per-minute for two music tracks to help the user easily create a mix. The Pacemaker works with a PC or a Mac and supports all the common audio formats including MP3, WAV, AAC, etc.

A free mixer program called Pacemaker Editor (available for Mac and PC) is available for download from the Tonium web site. As well as being an audio player it allows you to edit or create mixes on your PC or Mac. You can upload mixes to the Pacemaker or download them from the device to your computer.

The unit is a tidy size (16.4 x 7 x 2.3 cm) and weight (200 g.) and has a built in colour screen. It is powered by a rechargeable battery that will last up to 18 hours for straight music playing or about five hours when used as a DJ mixer.

Availability and pricing in Canada is unknown at this time. The website is taking pre-orders and the listed price is 520 Euros (just under $800 at mid-Jan2008 exchange rates) Check it out at http://www.pacemaker.net/.
