LaCie, Samsung collaborate on tiny drives

The fruits of a joint project between LaCie and Samsung were shown at this year’s Macworld show. LaCie’s latest generations of the Little Disk and USB Key Max use Samsung’s 1.3 inch hard drives and will be available in 30 gigabyte and 40 GB versions.

The 1.3-inch drives are roughly the same size as a CompactFlash II card (although the original CF II microdrive developed by companies like Hitachi and IBM use a one-inch hard drive).

LaCie says the drives are pre-formatted as FAT32 and can be used with Windows XP/Vista, MacOSX or Linux without the need to install drivers. The USB 2.0 drives come with an on board USB cable that serves as both a data and power conduit. The products ship with LaCie’s ‘1-Click’ Backup Software (PC and Mac) as well as the SilverKeeper backup for Mac and synchronization and encryption software for Windows. Pricing for the 1.3-inch Little Disk starts at around $120. The USB Key Max pricing starts at $110. Seem more at http://www.lacie.com/.
