Honeywell pipes HD signals over Ethernet cables

Homes already wired with Category 5 or Category 6 Ethernet cabling can use the network for home theatre applications, thanks to a new HDMI to Cat5/Cat6 converter system from Honeywell.

According to the company, a 1080p signal can be transmitted up to 40 metres (125 feet) using a pair of Cat5 or 65 metres (200 feet) with a par of Cat6 cables. The converter consists of an encoder/transmitter unit at one end and a decoder/receiver unit at the other.

Honeywell says the system will support HDMI, HDTV, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p video. It is also compatible with DVI, and supports VGA through UXGA computer monitor resolutions. Among the signals the system will handle include cable TV, satellite receivers, high- definition TiVo, Xbox360, PS3, Apple TV, and HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players.

In addition to private homes, Honeywell is targeting corporate and educational applications. The company has not announced pricing. See http://www.honeywellcable.com/ .
