Panasonic caps SDHC Pro line with 16 GB card

Panasonic Canada (http://www.panasonic.ca/) has introduced a 16 gigabyte SDHC memory card.

This is the latest in its Pro High Speed line and has a Class 6 speed rating, the fastest currently specified in the SDHC standard. Panasonic says the capacity will allow a video camera user to store around two hours and 40 minutes of HD video in AVCHD fine mode at 1920 x 1089i resolution or more than four hours in normal mode. For digital SLRs that use SDHC cards for storage, such as the Nikon D40 and D80 Pentax 10D and Panasonic’s own DMC-L10K, the 16 GB card will store more than 1,000 images even in raw format. Estimated price for the card is around $380.

SDHC is the high-capacity version of the SD card format, and even though the two cards are identical visually, SDHC cards are not compatible with SD devices (although SDHC devices will read older SD cards). The “HC” in the name refers to high capacity and typically refer to cards with capacities larger than two gigabytes. The cards have a theoretical capacity limit of more than two terabytes.

In developing the standard, the SDHC alliance tried to develop a speed rating system so that consumers could expect a certain level of performance regardless of who manufactured the card. Currently there are three classes: Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6 having minimum data write speeds of 2MB/sec, 4MB/sec and 6MB/sec. Panasonic claims data transfer speeds of up to 20 MB/sec with the new card.
