Laser speed, inkjet investment

Epson claims its Stylus C120 printer is "one of the world's fastest laser-quality ink jet printers," pushing out monochrome pages at a blistering speed of up to 37 pages per minute (ppm).

The company says the latest in its document ink jet line is designed for executives, small office / home office (SOHO) and families looking to create durable, high-quality documents in a hurry but who don't want to make the choice between the expense of colour laser and the limitations of mono laser printers.

Based on independent testing, the Epson C120 offers the fastest black text printing compared to ink jet printers under $160 -- as of April 2007 -- and is up to two times faster compared to ink jet printers under $100. The printer also delivers impressive speeds for laser-quality colour text printing. When even faster printing is needed, the Epson C120 can print at speeds up to 37 pages per minute (ppm) for black and 20 ppm for colour in draft mode.

Epson claims its DURABrite Ultra inks produce smudge- and water-resistant text and colour images on plain and photo paper and says the output is highlighter resistant even on plain paper. The ink cartridge system uses individual cartridges for each colour and uses dual black cartridges to boost yields and print time.

The Epson Stylus C120 goes for $69.99. Dual high-capacity black ink cartridges go for $40 while individual colour ink goes for about $12 per unit with a CMY multi-pack costing about $37.
