Olympus has packed a linear PCM field recorder into a 165 gram (5.8 oz) package you can put in your pocket. With a mouthful of a name, the LS-10 Linear PCM Audio Recording Device will record in uncompressed 24 bit/96KHz linear PCM format, as well as MP3 and WMA. The unit has two gigabytes of onboard memory but also an SDHC slot that accommodates both SD and SDHC cards. The onboard memory is enough for up to three hours of PCM audio or as much as 69 hours of WMA format audio — and with SDHC cards now available in 16GB versions, you have a lot of storage potential.
The unit has built-in stereo speakers as well as stereo microphones (but a jack allows you to also use an external mic), and includes a manual recording level controller. The LS-10 runs on two AA cells and Olympus claims the unit can record about 12 hours before the batteries need replacing/recharging. A 1.8 inch LCD screen can be used to manage the folders and other functions of the unit.
The LS-10 has a lot of single function buttons — record, stop, erase etc. with the most important ones strategically located, so it should be relatively easy to use this in the field without fumbling for controls. An optional wireless unit allows you to start and stop recording remotely. Included with the LS-10 is Steinberg CUBASE LE 4 Sound editing software, a carrying case, USB and audio cables and a strap. Estimated street price is approximately $400. For more information, check out the Olympus web site: http://www.olympus.com/
