Apple Introduces Xsan 2

Storage area network filing system for the enterprise

Apple and enterprise computing don’t often occupy the same thought, but in fact Apple has a strong product line to serve big companies including Xserve servers and multidrive RAID arrays along with the server version of OSX. Xsan 2 is the latest version of the storage area network filing system that pulls it all together. It is now integrated with OSX Leopard, which means it can take advantage of Leopard features like Spotlight, allowing search across multiple storage area network volumes. It also works with the Server Assistant found in Leopard Server, which simplifies setup of SAN volumes. Apple says it also now works with RAID storage systems from Promise Technology.
Apple says Xsan 2 will integrate with Leopard Server features like iCal Server, Mail Server and Podcast Producer, reducing downtime from the loss of one server in a cluster. The admin tools have been redesigned to simplify setting up a storage area network filing system and also to tune it for specific kinds of data types.
Xsan 2 is available from Apple Canada for $1,099 per node.
