Olympus refreshes camera line with nine

Olympus has announced nine new models spanning its three point and shoot camera lines. This includes a new SP series flagship with a 20x optical zoom and four models each in the Stylus and FE series.
The SP-570 Ultra Zoom is styled like a single lens reflex although it has a fixed lens and the viewfinder is electronic rather than optical. The fixed lens may not matter to many users because it has an incredible 20x optical zoom range of 26-520mm (35mm equivalent). It uses a 10 megapixel sensor and includes many high-end SLR features such RAW image capture, a hot shoe for auxiliary flash units, full manual control and image stabilization. It also includes a contrast compensation technology called Shadow Adjustment, which allows the photographer to capture shadow and highlight details in a high-contrast scene. For close-up photography, the lens will focus as close as one centimetre. Big screens are the rage in digicams and the SP-570 includes a 2.7-inch LCD. The camera will be available in March at an estimated price of approximately $530.
Olympus also introduced two new waterproof models in the Stylus family: the 1030 SW and 850 SW. The 1030 SW is the extreme athlete of the Stylus family. It is waterproof to a depth of 10 m (33 ft.) and includes a built-in pressure gauge or manometer, is also dust proof, can be used in temperatures as low as -10C and can withstand crush forces of up to 100 kg or a two metre drop. Olympus also sells an auxiliary underwater housing that lets you use the camera at a depth of up 40 metres. The 1030 SW uses a 10.1 megapixel sensor and incorporates a 3.6x optical zoom lens (28-102 mm equiv.). It has all the features you’d expect in a premium point and shoot such as extensive scene modes, and movie mode, but includes some interesting not-so-common ones like in-camera panoramas. Estimated price is approximately $400.
The 850 SW is a junior version of the 1030 SW, with a similar feature set. This eight megapixel model is shockproof and waterproof although not to as great an extent as the 1050 (the 850 is waterproof to three metres and drop tested to 1.5 metres), but it is dustproof and can also operate in temperatures as low as -10C. The Stylus 850 SW also has more fashion flair, being available in five colours (blue, yellow, pink, black and silver). Like others in the point and shoot line it has features like face detection technology. Suggested price is $299.99
Olympus’s entry-level FE line has been refreshed with four new models — FE-310, FE-320, FE-340 and FE-350. All are eight megapixel models and use either 4x or 5x optical zoom lenses. Prices range from $150 for the FE-310 to $250 for the FE-350.
