Photo geotag your next trip

Photo geotagging is exploding in popularity. To play, you just need a way to match each photo you take with GPS co-ordinates of your location. A few companies are producing the software or the hardware — or both — to simplify the photo geotagging process, and the latest to enter this field is Pharos Science & Applications, Inc. (http://www.pharosgps.com/).

Pharos has taken one of its existing GPS receivers, the iGPS-500, added a battery pack and some synchronization/mapping software, and named the new product Trips & Pics. The product makes photo geotagging as simple as just bringing the iGPS-500 receiver along with you on your photo outing. After your photo shoot, you connect the receiver to the computer and follow the instructions on how to match the GPS unit’s track log to the photos you’ve taken. You can also export digital photos and GPS location to an online mapping site that supports photo geotagging — for example, Google Earth.

Pharos says that Trips & Pics also support Geographic encoded Really Simple Syndication (GeoRSS) so you can add location data to your blog. With the Trips & Pics software you can track time, location, heading and speed, and map points. You can also adjust the tracking interval from once a second to once every five minutes. The receiver is powered by a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery that the company estimates will keep the unit working for about 24 hours. The receiver is small and light — 7 x 4.5 x 2 cm and 60 grams (2.8 x 1.85 x 0.89 inches and 2.12 ounces). Estimated cost of Pharos Trips & Pics is approximately $90.
