Adobe has announced Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac and says the the software will be previewed at the Macworld show beginning January 14. Preview is the operative word, since the company says retail product will not ship until early Q2 (April-ish?). The product is significant if only for the fact that once again Windows and Mac users will have the same version.
For the past few generations, the Mac version of PS Elements has been one version behind the Windows version. It was the optics perhaps more than the feature differences that were bad, particularly for Mac users who like to think they have the latest wares. Some of the features introduced in Elements 6 for Windows appear in the Mac version too — Photomerge, for example, that lets you take several shots of a group and combine the best facial expression of each into a single photo where everyone looks good. As well there are various editing modes, from one-click simple to pixel-by-pixel control. In short, if this product is similar to the Windows version, there will be good reasons to move to it.
You’ll need a relatively recent version of OS X to run PS Elements. Adobe says at least OS X 10.4.8 (Tiger) or of course the most current version, 10.5 aka Leopard. Price will likely be sub $100.
