TiVo comes to Canada

TiVo, the world’s first digital video recorder, is now available at major Canadian retailers. The launch took place at the Bay & Dundas Best Buy store in Toronto last week.

TiVo connects in-between your cable or satellite box and your television and will record any show that you can watch on your TV. The model available to Canadians is the TiVo Series2 DT DVR, which can store up to 80 hours of content and allows you to record two programs on different channels at the same time. And yes, just like you could fast forward through commercials on a VHS tape recorded on your VCR, you can fast forward through programming recorded on your TiVo.

This model also has a built-in Ethernet port so you can connect it to your home Internet network and use your TV to watch photo slideshows or listen to MP3s that are stored on your computer. You can also transfer your recorded shows to your laptop or portable media player (such as Apple’s Video iPod or the Sony PlayStation Portable) for viewing outside of your home. Programming that you transfer to your computer can also be burned onto DVD.

There’s no “off” button on the TiVo. If you’re away from home and realized you forgot to set your TiVo to record a show, you can go online to schedule your recordings.

With its sole focus on the DVR (TiVo has no other divisions), the company has developed several features that you won’t find anywhere else.

The “Wish List,” for example, will automatically find and record shows that match your interests. All you have to do is enter which titles, actors, directors or categories interest you. TiVo can also find and record programs based on keywords.

“Season Pass” is another unique TiVo service that will automatically record your favourite shows, without you needing to know what time or channel they will be playing on. And if you only want first-run episodes, the TiVo can be set to ignore re-runs.

You can also set up a “KidZone,” which will only find, record and play content that you pre-approve for your kids. Unless they have your 4-digit password, your kids won’t be able to watch anything else.

With so many features and options available on the TiVo, you might think it would be complicated to use. It’s not. The device has a very user-friendly interface with clear instructions displayed on your TV screen. It’s easy to set up and comes with one of the most comfortable remotes.

The TiVo Series2 DT DVR is reasonably priced at $199, but to use the service you’ll also have to pay a monthly subscription fee of $12.95 or pre-pay $129 for one year of service. For more details, visit www.tivo.com/canada .
