Kodak Debuts Pocket Video Camera

Video sharing has grown a lot in the past several years what with the exponentially expanding popularity of the social net and sites like Facebook and YouTube working in tandem to spread videos across the world.
Another major reason that video sharing is all the rage is an increased availability and variety (as well as decreased price) of hardware. Products like the Flip from Pure Digital Technologies and the Vado from Creative are small, affordable, and make shooting and posting small videos a breeze.
Now, added to their midst, comes the Kodak Zi6. This is another entry in the compact camcorder class, but with the remarkable additions of HD shooting capabilities and a SD card clot for expandable memory.
Of course, the Zi6 will also have the short but noteworthy list of features that made the other cameras shine — the ability to shoot videos within 10 seconds of startup, up to 2x zoom for distant shots, and a folding USB arm that can easily connect with a computer to transfer footage.
But what truly separates this camera from others in its class are the video modes that users can choose from, ranging from low quality (VGA) to either 30 or 60 fps HD footage at 720p resolution.
“Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in video as a means of sharing stories with friends. The KODAK Zi6 Pocket Video Camera gives consumers a high quality, portable HD video camera that is easy to use and easy to take everywhere you go," said Greg Morrison, marketing manager for Kodak Canada.
Other notable features of the Zi6 are the fact that it comes prepackaged with two Ni-MH rechargeable AA batteries and a charger for them, as well as video editing software which — as with other products of this type — is not compatible with Macs.
On the bright side, the Zi6 has a 2.4’’ LCD screen that makes reviewing videos a breeze (in slow motion too!) and the camera does have a “close up” mode that can take macro-style photos and video.
However, it must be said that the Zi6 is somewhat expensive at $179.95, which is more than any of its aforementioned competitors. Add that to the fact that with a 128 MB internal flash drive, buying an SD card to expand is all but mandatory, ramping up the cost of entry some.
Still, a pocket video camera from a major company like Kodak sounds like a product with promise.
Although already available in the United States, the Zi6 will be making its Canadian debut some time in October.
